A penis pump is a chamber with a soft seal at the base and a way of drawing the air or water out. The drop in pressure pulls blood into the erectile tissue, so the penis swells to fill the space. The result is a temporary increase in girth and firmness that fades after you finish, not a permanent change.
Choosing one comes down to air or water, a gauge or no gauge, and a chamber that suits your size. Most first time disappointment comes from a chamber that is too large, or a session run too hard.
How a penis pump works
You lubricate the seal, press the chamber against your body so the penis sits inside, and work the pump. Air or water leaves the tube, the pressure drops, and blood moves in until the penis fills it. A release valve lets air back in so the seal breaks and the pump lifts away.

The chamber sets the limit, because tissue can only fill the space it is given. The vacuum also does the work, not your grip, so small controlled steps beat hard squeezes.
Safety comes before technique
A pump is not suitable for everyone. Anyone with a heart condition, a blood clotting disorder, sickle cell disease or any other medical concern should speak to a doctor before using one, and nobody on blood thinners should use one at all. Stop at once if you feel pain, numbness, tingling, coldness or a colour change, release the pressure, and get medical advice if it does not settle. Bruising and broken capillaries come from too much vacuum held too long.
Never pump after alcohol or anything that dulls sensation, and never fall asleep with one on. If erections are the reason you are looking, see a doctor first, because vacuum therapy for erectile difficulty belongs under supervision.
Air pumps and hydro pumps
Air pumps use a trigger, a squeeze bulb or a hand pump on a hose. The Rev-Pump Trigger Penis Pump 8.5 Inches and the Rev-Pump Bulb Penis Pump 8.5 Inches are the simplest form: a clear tube, a release valve and a pump you work by hand. They need no water, though air pressure is less even and easy to overdo.
Bathmate pumps use water. You fill the chamber in the bath or shower and pump the water out, which gives a smoother vacuum. They are bulkier and need water, but sizing is explicit: the Bathmate Hydromax 5 suits an erect length of 3 to 5 inches, the Bathmate Hydroxtreme 7 5 to 7, and the 9 models, the Bathmate Hydromax 9 and the Bathmate Hydroxtreme 9, roughly 7 to 9. The Bathmate Hydroxtreme 7 Pump Only Clear is the pump, hose and handball without the extras.
Gauge or no gauge
Most bruising comes from adding pressure by feel, when the gap between comfortable and too much is small. A gauge shows the vacuum, so you can work to a number and stay there.
The Rev-Pump Gauge Pistol Grip Penis Pump is the obvious pick if you want that reassurance. The trigger and bulb models have no gauge, so you judge by feel and the release valve. That is workable, but if you are worried about damage, buy the dial. The number is a ceiling, not a target.
Fit, seal and how long to stay in
A chamber that is too wide pulls in skin and leaks, so match the published dimensions on the product page. Bathmate states erect length ranges, and the Rev-Pump cylinders are about six centimetres across inside.
Seals fail for boring reasons: hair, dry skin, an uneven press, or rubber that has hardened. Lubricate the seal, press straight on, and hold for a few seconds before pumping. If it hisses, reseat rather than pumping harder.
Then keep it short. Three to five minutes at low pressure, release, massage, and repeat up to three times is the usual pattern, and the one the Bathmate Pump Timer is built around, with green lights for time in and red for time out. More pressure does not shorten the learning curve. If it hurts, come off it.
Looking after the pump
Rinse the chamber, seal and valve with warm water and toy cleaner after every use, and dry everything before it goes back in the cupboard. A damp seal perishes faster and water left in a valve turns stale. Store the pump with the valve open, away from sunlight and anything heavy, because a warped tube will not seal.
Use a water based lubricant, since silicone lubricant can degrade silicone and TPE seals. Our lubricants range has water based options.
What to expect, honestly
During use and briefly afterwards the penis looks and feels fuller and firmer. That is blood and fluid, and it subsides, usually within a few hours. There is no reliable evidence that pumping produces permanent size gains, and a guide that promises them is selling you something. Results vary.
A pump is genuinely good for that short term effect: a firmer feel, more sensation, and something to do alone or with a partner. Go slowly, keep sessions short, and expect the first few attempts to be clumsy.
